Going Beyond the AC to Enhance Comfort

You’ve done just about everything you can to make sure your family’s comfortable in your Sarasota home. Your house is airtight, the AC is running at full efficiency, and relative humidity is in great shape. Yet you feel like there are a few more things you can do to achieve maximum comfort. Have you tried these comfort enhancements?

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans offer a wonderful solution on hot, humid days by drawing down the rising warm air on those occasional cold evenings. The energy they use is on par with a light bulb. When using a ceiling fan to cool an occupied room, you can turn up the thermostat a few degrees to save energy with your AC system. Remember, though, that a ceiling fan is only an effective cooling solution when a person is in the room to feel the breeze it generates.

Smart Thermostats

For maximum control over your comfort system, including temperature, air purification, and humidity, a smart thermostat is worth the investment. These appliances come in several grades, some of which feature Wi-Fi connectivity to allow for remote access using a phone app. Higher-end models have full-color touchscreen displays that will display the weather forecasts and controls for room-by-room zones, thermostat scheduling to match your household’s routines, and energy usage stats. Many of these smart devices will learn your thermostat behaviors throughout the week and begin automating them.

House Plants

Unless you have a green thumb, you might be surprised to see house plants on this list. Plants offer far more than decoration for your home. According to the 1989 NASA Clean Air Study, the following plants act as natural air purifiers by absorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs): peace lily, chrysanthemum, devil’s ivy, red-edged dracaena, snake plant, and lady palm. VOCs include formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, and xylene and are emitted from carpeting, furniture, cleaning supplies, and paint. These chemicals can cause eye, ear, nose, and throat irritation, along with headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and cough.
