The first step before you rush into buying a dehumidifier is to check that your existing A/C system is big enough for your house. With an inadequate system, your A/C handling humidity potential will be slashed and excess humidity produced.
But if your A/C unit is already optimized, then a dehumidifier may be the right next step for you. Like air conditioners, dehumidifiers remove moisture by condensing water vapor from the indoor air. One drawback of dehumidifiers in the summer is they release the warm air produced in this process back into the home.
The next decision is whether to go for a whole house system or a portable system. The whole house option is more expensive, but requires little maintenance. Portable units, which can be moved from room to room, are cheaper but you need to remember to remove the water collected in the unit on a regular basis.
