Prepare Your Florida Home for Winter

Florida’s winter climate may be mild, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare your home for the cooler months. To stay warm and comfortable this winter, here are four ways to prep your Sarasota, Florida, home before chilly weather arrives.

Check Insulation

Insulation is vital in keeping your home comfortable. Air leaks reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. In summer, the air conditioner’s cold air escapes. In winter, warm air isn’t retained, plus cold air from outside slips through gaps around windows and doors. This means your HVAC system will have to work harder to keep your house at the desired temperature, which, in turn, will increase your electric bill. Scan your home for air leaks and ask your local HVAC contractor to check if your attic is adequately insulated.

Give the HVAC a Tune-up

Your home’s HVAC system is another important factor in home comfort. If the furnace or heat pump is not working properly, you may find yourself adding layers of clothing to stay warm. Call your HVAC technician during fall to run a check on the heating system so that repairs can be completed before winter sets in. That way, you’ll avoid the inconvenience and discomfort of your heating system breaking down on a chilly winter’s day. Consider signing up for a maintenance plan, which will ensure your HVAC system gets a full service every year.

Inspect the Roof

Once you’ve checked the inside, head outside for a quick roof inspection. Although Florida sees its heaviest rainfall in summer, don’t rule out showers during winter. In addition, strong winds can wreak havoc with a home’s roof. Check the condition of the roof’s shingles, gutters, downspouts, and chimney if you have a fireplace. Clear the gutter of any buildup of leaves and debris, and if any shingles need replacing, call a roofing contractor.

Properly preparing your home for winter means more comfort and fewer problems during the cold winter months. To check your home’s heating system, contact Climatic Conditioning Co., Inc. at (941) 758-3080. One of our HVAC technicians will gladly conduct a full inspection.
