Tips to Improve Your Home's Indoor Air Quality

When you think about air pollution in the Bradenton, Florida, area, your mind may jump to smog or haze that hangs in the air outside. It may come as a surprise to learn that the indoor air in your home is often more polluted than what you breathe outside. With a few simple steps, you can improve the indoor air quality in your home and breathe easier.

Duct Cleaning

When your HVAC system runs, it pulls air through the registers and moves it into the unit for heating or cooling. That air may contain dust, dirt, pollen, pet hair, dander, dust mites, and other toxins. Your HVAC system has a filter that can keep some of those particles out, but some may come through and settle in the ducts. As a result, the indoor air quality often goes down and your system has to work harder, resulting in inefficiency and energy waste.

Regular duct cleaning is the easiest way to combat this problem. During a duct cleaning service, your HVAC technician eliminates the built-up of contaminants, ensuring that your indoor air quality is better. You may also notice a decrease in your monthly energy bills after a duct cleaning service.

Keep it Clean

You can also do some work around the house to improve the indoor air quality. When there are fewer toxins floating around the house, you won’t have as many go into your HVAC system and decrease the air quality. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter once or twice per week to reduce the concentration of contaminants in your home. Be sure to run the vacuum over upholstered furniture regularly as well. After you finish vacuuming, bring out the mop to pick up any dust left behind by your vacuum.

Maintain the Humidity

When the humidity in your home is too high, mold and dust mites tend to thrive. Use a dehumidifier as needed to keep the level between 30 and 50 percent. During the summer months, your central air conditioner will help manage humidity.
