Choosing a Thermostat

The right thermostat can help you keep your Palmetto, Florida, home comfortable and lower your utility bills. A thermostat that works well will get rid of uncomfortable temperature variations and keep your rooms close to the temperature you set, also called the set point. Standard, programmable, and smart thermostats are available to suit a variety of homeowners with different HVAC systems and routines.

Digital and Mechanical Thermostats

Digital thermostats are common in businesses and homes, and they have a digital temperature display and buttons that allow you to increase or decrease your set point. Some models also have switches to change from air conditioning to heating or to run only your HVAC system’s fan for air circulation.

Mechanical thermostats have a lever or dial for adjusting the temperature, and they don’t have a temperature display. They’re less expensive, but their thermometers aren’t as sensitive. This means they can’t control the temperature in your home as well as digital thermostats.

Programmable Thermostats

A programmable thermostat is a digital thermostat that can raise or lower your home’s temperature automatically to save energy. That way, you can save money without having to remember to turn your thermostat down or off every time you go to sleep or leave for work. However, using and programming this thermostat is more complicated than using a traditional digital or mechanical thermostat.

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats, also called learning thermostats, can learn your routine and adjust your home’s temperature on their own. They’re ideal for people who have lots of tasks on their schedule and don’t want to spend time setting a programmable thermostat or adjusting a traditional model. You can even control many smart thermostats from your computer or smartphone. However, they’re more expensive than the other types of thermostats available.
