What Makes an HVAC System Tick?

Your HVAC system does everything from heating, to cooling, to maintaining indoor air quality and humidity. Have you ever wondered how it does that? Understanding the inner workings of your Sarasota, Florida, home, makes it easier to understand and fix problems. If you’re a DIY person, knowing how an HVAC system works can help guide your weekend projects. While there are a handful of different types of HVAC systems, most rely on a form of heat transfer with the help of refrigerant.

Central Cooling

Central cooling systems generally consist of an outdoor cabinet, which contains a condenser coil and compressor, and an indoor evaporator coil. Warm air inside your home blows across the indoor evaporator coil, where heat is transferred to refrigerant inside the coil. The refrigerant is then moved through the compressor and the heat is taken outside. The cooled air is then blown by fans through a duct network and into the rooms of your home. Central air conditioning often works with a separate furnace.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps follow the same structure of a central heating and cooling system, but rather than using an air conditioning unit and a furnace, a single heat pump unit can heat and cool your home. During the summer, a heat pump draws heat from inside your home and forces it outside, while in the winter, heat pumps draw heat from the outdoors.

Ductless Systems

A ductless HVAC system (a variation of a heat pump system) also relies on refrigerant-assisted heat transfer between an outdoor compressor and an indoor air handler unit. However, the indoor air handler sits on the wall of your living space. Fans in the unit blow cooled air directly into the room.
