If your HVAC system is a heat pump using R-22 refrigerant, you should start thinking about an upgrade. A ban on producing or importing R-22 goes into effect across the United States in 2020. Fortunately, the new ban will not require all homeowners to invest in a total heat pump replacement.
What is R-22?
R-22 is a refrigerant used in air conditioning systems and heat pumps. Concerns over the environmental impact of the refrigerant when it leaks from such systems have led to the decision to enact a ban.
Determining If Your Heat Pump Uses R-22
The easiest way to determine whether your heat pump uses R-22 is to consult the owner’s manual. If you no longer have access to the manual, you can search the manufacturer and model of your heat pump to determine what kind of refrigerant is used. Another option is to contact a heating and cooling specialist.
If your heat pump was manufactured in 2010 or later, you can rest assured that it does not use R-22. The United States Environmental Protection Agency set a ban on the manufacture and import of all equipment utilizing the refrigerant as of Jan. 1, 2010.
The Next Steps
Even if your heat pump uses R-22, you do not need to take immediate action if the refrigerant is not leaking. When you decide to replace the system in the future, more modern options on the market will comply with updated environmental standards. In the meantime, be sure to invest in routine heat pump maintenance to prevent leaks from developing. A well-maintained heat pump that uses this refrigerant could continue running efficiently for several years.
