Now that we’re in the midst of hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), are you fully prepared? Here are some top tips not only to stay safe during a hurricane, but also on how to protect your HVAC system if disaster strikes near you.
In Your Home:
- Turn your refrigerator up to its maximum chill
- Turn off your utilities if advised by authorities
- Switch off propane tanks
- Ensure small appliances are unplugged
- Fill your bathtub and other large containers with water; this is for cleaning and flushing only, NOT drinking
In Case of Strong Winds:
- Keep your distances from windows and doors, regardless of whether they are covered. Find refuge in a small, enclosed room, hallway or closet.
- Ensure all interior doors are shut. External doors should be secured and braced.
- If your house is a two-story, stay in an interior room on the first floor.
- If you’re in a multi-story building and not near water, pick an interior room or hall on the first or second floor, staying away from windows.
- Lie down on the floor under something sturdy, like a large table.
Protecting your HVAC system
- Turn off your air conditioner.
- If your window A/C unit or portable air conditioner has discharge ducts, these ducts should be removed and the opening sealed.
- All outdoor condensing units or air conditioners should be covered using tarp or plywood in order to protect from debris.
- Outdoor air conditioners should be secured using hurricane straps, in order to protect from high winds.
Once the Storm Has Passed
Carefully inspect your air conditioning and heating systems BEFORE you turn them on. In some cases, you may require assistance from a mechanical or professional HVAC contractor to ensure your unit will operate safely.
If your air conditioner needs repair work, you can always rent spot coolers. Portable air conditioners are easy to move into place and they start cooling quickly with little fuss. Because it’s portable, the entire unit is indoors and protected from outside weather.
